Laurens is a city in Laurens County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,916 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Laurens CountyGR6. Located in northwest South Carolina, it is named after Henry Laurens, who was president of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War.. Textiles and glass products used to be major manufacturing industries in town, but the glass plant closed several years ago and most of the textile mills have closed now.
Original maps indicate the town may have originally been called Laurensville. The first reference to it being called Laurens is a town charter in 1873. Laurens is located at 34303N, 8216W (34.500717, -82.018271)GR1.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,916 people, 3,952 households, and 2,596 families residing in the city. The population density was 361.5/km (936.6/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 53.72% White, 43.57% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 1.34% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.42% of the population.
